And The Winner Is... by Steve Plunk

   In the October 11 edition of What's Up, I posed a Gay, Lesbian, and
Bisexual History Month quiz contest challenge to the What's Up community
to test their knowledge of gay history. I am pleased to announce the
correct responses to and the winner of the Gay History 101 quiz.

1. What openly gay supervisor was assassinated in 1978 for his activism
in the gay civil rights movement? Harvey Milk.
2. Whatfamous 19th century poet was described as the "eccentric maiden
lady, the 'moth' of Amherst dressed only in white, who flitted almost
ghostlike through her house and garden?" Emily Dickenson.
3. What symbol was branded on the uniforms of gay concentration camp
prisoners in Nazi Germany? Pink Triangle.
4. What movie, based on the book by Randy Shilts chronicled the
discovery of HIV and its impact on our culture? And the Band Played On.
5. What gay church, founded in 1968 by Protestant Minister Troy Perry,
now has congregations from coast to coast? Metropolitan Community Church.
6. What African American gay male poet was a 1986 recipient of the
Fellowship in Literature from the National Endowment for the Arts, and
was featured in the TV production of Tongues Untied? Essex Hemphill.
7. Where did the term 'Lesbian originate? Sappho, a legendary Greek
lesbian poet, lived and taught on the island of Lesbos hence the term lesbian.
8. ENDA and DOMA were two recent gay-related bills In the U.S. Congress.
What ramifications would they have had on the gay community? ENDA
would have ended job discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, but
was defeated; DOMA, if defeated, would have challenged the male - female
dichotomy used to define marriage. DOMA passed.
9. This actor received an academy award for his portrayal of a homosexual
lawyer with AIDS. Who is the actor and the movie in which he starred?
Tom Hanks - Philadelphia.
10. What 19th century gay author celebrated his sexuality and the male
body in 'Song of Myself?' Walt Whitman.
11. In 1989, which institution became the first college in U.S. History to
have a department of gay and lesbian studies? City College of San Francisco.

   The winner of the Gay History 101 quiz contest with 10 out of 11 correct
responses was Portage County resident Paul Platz. Paul has received a jumbo
jar of ForPlay lubricant, a month's supply of condoms and assorted flavored
lubricants, an AIDS Awareness coffee mug, T-Shirt, and a gay novel.
