Cruisin'... With Parkside Travel
to Washington D.C. Quilt Display
Just in time to give our national leaders
a chance to show their
support for gay issues, the "final" exhibition of the AIDS Quilt
was scheduled on the weekend of October 11. We didn't decide
to make the trip until the last minute and were surprised to find
that hotel space was already booked even out to the far suburbs.
Only a dedicated computer search yielded us a room at a
Howard Johnson Motel, a couple of blocks from Dupont Circle,
which is the center of gay life in Washington. It was incredible to
be surrounded by fellow gays from all over the country in one of
our unique celebrations. Under more normal circumstances, there
is a wide choice of travel options. The drive to Washington D.C.
is only 8 hours; and leaves you with a way to get around, upon
arrival. Also affordable is the flight to Baltimore Maryland. From
there you can take the train into downtown Washington and then
connect to the Metro, or take a taxi. Baltimore, itself, has a couple
of fine bed and breakfast inns; Abercrombie, Badger, and
Mr. Mole. The renovated Harborfront is an attraction, in it's own
right. In the Dupont Circle area, the Breton Inn is both convenient
and affordable while the Dupont Plaza Hotel is in the price range
of other big city hotels. For eats, we had lunch at Annie's for a
very reasonable $10 per person. In a city by the sea, one has
many choices for seafood. Ours was Kincades, located
downtown, and moderately priced. For those of you who aren't
coffee addicts, there is Teasm, with a variety of herbal and
flavored teas and sandwiches to round out the menu. Wherever
we go, we always satisfy our taste for beef by stopping at a
Ruth's Chris Steak House. Because the politicians want to show
how generous they are, there are many free things to do in
Washington; including our national museums. In addition, the
many changing events and performances can be checked out by
getting M/W, a weekly arts and entertainment guide, or by sending
for a copy of the Washington Blade, the local gay newspaper.
Parkside Travel can make plane and hotel reservations for a great
weekend get-away in Washington D.C.
