When I was young,
I had access to pornography -- as did every
other kid in America. I think my main attraction to it was the fact that
it was so forbidden. The one big difference was that it was printed on
paper, and really only offered pictures of models -- not average, everyday
people. Now that I have the Internet, I can find pictures of all sorts
of
people -- real people, amateur photographs of naked people sitting right
in front their computers looking at me. How's that for getting close to
the
source?
This certainly would
have been a good experience for me years ago
when I was not yet out. I might have had better expectations and felt
much more at ease with my preference of partner. It's a very nice feeling
to be able to explore sexuality in total privacy, while at the same time
being connected to the thoughts of the whole world. Sex isn't all evil.
It's
a big part of being human. It's fascinating. Whatever your sexual bent
might be, there is a great deal of comfort in finding that you are not
the
only person in the world to have had that thought. Other people are into
your thing too. Sometimes I like to check out other people's ideas of kinky,
just to get an idea of what else is out there. Some people are into fetishes
that don't have anything to do with being naked or engaging in sexual acts.
To these people, a totally G-rated picture might be as much of a turn on
as
hard-core-porn is to someone else.
If there is anything
that would keep a gay person in the closet it would
be the feeling that no one would like them if they came out anyway. To
which I say, Sweetheart, what are you waiting for? Check around the
Internet. You'll find that there are all kinds of people who look a lot
like
you that are getting all kinds of attention. Everyone is attractive to
someone else. Now there is proof, and you might even find them this way
too.
A whole new frontier
of sexual discovery awaits us now. The flood gates
are wide open, and yes, there will be a lot of problems with this new
unchecked line of communication. But time will tell that things will settle
down and real growth will occur within humanity in general. Learning more
about ourselves, our likenesses and differences, in an environment where
no one faction can control information can only be a positive influence.
Less
than twenty years from now, there will be adults that never knew the world
without the Internet. JL
