FREAKIN' COMPUTERS MAN!
How To Have Your Cake And Eat It Too!
by
James Lehman
Many of you may be subscribers to America's largest
online computer service, and with good reason too. It's
a lot of fun! I'm on there myself! But, did you know
that you can get a local Internet connection, and cut
the cost of your national service in half?
When you dial in to a national service provider, you
call a local number. That means that you are calling
into a modem that is right here in the local calling
area. This modem is probably not owned by the national
service. They have to pay about half of what they get
from you so that you can use it. You can chose a
billing plan that says that you won't be using their
(leased) modems and use a local Internet Service
Provider, like rainbow-akron.com or akrobiz.com to dial
up and establish a TCP/IP connection from your computer
to the Internet, and go into your national service
provider that way. You're not dialing into the same pool
of modems that everyone else in the area is. And, if you
get knocked off the service, you need not wait through
the whole dial up process to get reconnected.
Windows 95 has everything it needs, built right into
the operating system, to establish the best possible, 32
bit Internet connection that your computer can have. It
also has PING, TRACERT, TELNET, FTP, etc... giving you
all of the advanced capabilities of fully interactive
computer networking. A licensed version of Windows 95
also entitles you to use (free) the Microsoft Internet
Explorer; simply the best Internet interface you can get
for Windows 95. An advanced version of which is soon to
become a totally integrated part of Windows 97.
National online services require you to install
their own software, which is what gives you the unique
environment that they have to offer. In fact most of
them existed before the Internet and the World Wide Web
really took off. Most of the activity that goes on
within a national service is right there on that service
and makes no use of the rest of the Internet or the WWW
at all.
