What's Up

Issue #30

Of Possible Interest
by Terry Zimmerman

THIS ISSUE is dedicated to those from our
community whom we have lost, mostly due to AIDS. They
represent our brothers, our sisters, and yes, even
mothers and fathers. Some of them we knew as loved
ones, and others as outstanding citizens of our
community. We wish to thank Vince Morvatz for his help
in compiling the names represented on our cover. If we
have overlooked anyone, please let us know.

STATISTICS PROVIDED TO US FROM THE OHIO DEPT.
OF HEALTH indicate that there have been 248 deaths in
Summit County from AIDS related illnesses since 1981,
(although the total given by them is 124, the numbers
add up to 248) the first being 1 death in 1982. Oddly
no other deaths are listed until 1986, at which point
the number of deaths increased yearly until 1994, and
they have been declining since then.

Statewide they report a total of 3,109, although
totalling those figures adds up to 5,856. This makes
me wonder what the real figures are.

Nationally they show 361,552 deaths and those
figures add up correctly. This amounts to nearly 7
times the deaths of Americans that were killed in the
Vietnam war. This is equal to half again the number of
people in the city of Akron. Think of it, all of the
people of Akron and parts of its suburbs GONE.

Why aren't the people of America outraged? Why are
they not demonstrating in mass against a government
who for years, ignored what was happening to our
friends and loved ones?

Was it some sort of perverted genocide to get rid
of the FAGS that made them ignore this horrendous
problem? Who knows? But the time for change is here.
