DO YOU REMEMBER? Do you remember what it was like to be Gay
in Akron in the 50's, 60's and 70's? If you do we would like to
hear from you. Remember the old S. Howard St. that ran from
Market St. and then curved up to meet S. Main St. where Mill
St. intersected it?
What about the Lincoln Bar and the Cadillac Bar, the
Lincoln being for men and the Cadillac being for womyn. Do you
know anything about them?
What was Grace Park like in the days before the street
hustlers and drug addicts took it over?
What was the first Gay bar in Akron? Were there any other
places that attracted a predominately Gay crowd?
If you have any stories about these or other items that may
be of historical interest to the Gay community then please
share them with us. Your name does not have to be mentioned in
the articles that we would like to do in a series on "Akron Gay
History". We will come and interview you if you would like to
help us with this project.
Who the hell is this Terry Zimmerman anyway, and why does
he think that he has the right to criticize us? That is a
question that seems to be coming up a lot lately. Well, in a
nutshell, I am a 54 year old man who by virtue of my employment
and my place in the "straight" community was unable to be "out"
due to the legal discrimination in employment that is still
permitted against Gays in Ohio. I am now retired from that job
and I am trying to make up for lost time. I want to make a
difference so that others who come after me will not have to
suffer through the same sort of crap that I did. I will not go
away anytime soon and my intention is to do something to help
others. A unified Gay community in the Akron / Canton / areas
is our major goal and we need to stop bickering and get down to
the truth. If we don't work together, nothing will change, and
Gay discrimination wil continue.
