What's Up

Issue #35
August 1st  1997

Dear Friends, Members, and Allies:

We have ambitious plans for Stonewall Akron, but we need
your help. We cannot continue with less than a fifth of our
contacts contributing financially. It is hoped that many of you
can help, and we hope to convince you of the need of so doing.

We've spent over four years building a politically viable
organization with a strong base of local nonpartisan support
and a track record of local leadership on gay, lesbian, bisexual
issues. Following are notes of some of our past year's
accomplishments. After that you'll read of our plans:

     * Participation in the first-ever statewide "gay lobby day"...
     * Educated our community with our second and even better
        Candidate's Forum
     * Led the northeast Ohio response rally to the Supreme
        Court's ruling on Amendment 2.
     * Supported our families in the community against a
        threatening domestic relations judge...

Working relationships have been developed, responses
to broad and local threats issued. Although more than half of
our funds are spent on the newsletter, it has continued to be
sent to those requesting it. We recently accepted the offer of
good friends to host and sponsor a new Web site, and its
premiere appearance and address will soon be announced. All
this has been done with a large amount of volunteer time and a
surprisingly small amount of money.

Many thanks to our volunteers who have done countless
tasks to help, and thanks go out also to all of you who have
sent in your pledge checks. All of these activities have kept us
viable so far.

Great events can grow past the planning stage for this fall,
provided we receive your assistance: local exhibition of the
nationally acclaimed Love Makes a Family Photo Exhibit,
educational programs, a gay film festival, and others
surrounding the October 11 National Coming Out Day; a slate
of activities for Akron's first Pride celebration.

We're out in front, and ask you to stand behind us. Please
consider a contribution of $100 to be one of ten sponsors
needed to underwrite the photo exhibit. $40 pays for a mass
mailing to schools and the media to publicize the photo exhibit.
$20 buys a box of labels or envelopes, $15 pays for the meeting
room or answering service for a month. And if you have not yet
joined, please do. Your generous contribution will be used in
your community, for the issues important to your community.

     Sincerely,
     The Board of Stonewall Akron
     900 Park Ave. S.W., Canton, Ohio 44706

All are welcome to our next meeting at the
Fairlawn Park Garden and Civic Center, 7 pm, August 25th
