printer on a remote system. You know how printing stuff can pretty
much shut down your computer until it's done? Well, forget that! It
takes almost no time for your computer to send the job to the remote
machine and that's it! Your microprocessor is done with it and the
other system has to handle it. You can share a modem connection to
the Internet too. Yup! With one phone line and one modem, you can
put a room full of computers on the Internet. You can even establish
remote control of another system and run applications on it, just like
your mouse, keyboard and monitor were hooked up to it.
Ethernet is a very fast medium of data transfer, but it is limited in
its range of only 200 meters. There are Ethernet repeaters and
networks of networks that span cities. There are other methods of
carrying data over many miles; most notably T1 lines. The Internet
itself is actually thousands of LANs with T1 connections spanning the
greater distances. As a matter of fact Terry and I have a little network
of three computers in our home. We also have an ISDN modem which
is a fully qualified Ethernet device itself. So, our LAN is connected (at
128Kb) to another LAN that is in downtown Akron. That LAN is the
home of several business' Internet servers, including Akron's own
RAINBOW SERVER, home of rainbow-akron.com and What's Up
Magazine. That LAN is connected to several T1 lines headed for
Cleveland, where it finds itself hooked to all four major Internet
backbones of the world.
